Name/Nickname:
Jack Corney (pronounced cor-neigh)
Age:
Born April 19, 1981, aged 28, looks like early 30’s
Gender:
male
Height:
5’11’’ human, 6’9’’ monster
Weight:
210lbs human, 360lbs monster
Alignment:
lawful good with chaotic tendencies
Affliction:
Jack’s condition involves involuntary transformation into a large winged dragon creature. When in this form it is difficult for Jack to speak and he is most comfortable walking as a quadruped (although he can stand up and manipulate some objects). It takes a great deal of concentration still to maintain control and will occasionally lose it long enough to run off and hunt wild game in the forests around Bridgeport.
Nationality:
American, New Englander
Occupation:
associate professor of geology, Bridgeport College
Skills and Abilities:
Has gotten better at holding off his change and can sometimes induce it if he is inclined. This is rare though, and will even avoid flying to keep from being noticed. Jack doesn’t have any other particular abilities in his monster form save from an incredibly fast healing (which is related to his initial transformation).
Jack is a talented teacher and field geologist. He can drink anyone under the table, since he typically passes out On said table. Jack is looking to branch out and learn new things in his new surroundings (including trying to learn bass guitar).
Weaknesses:
High stress situations weaken Jack’s ability to control his form and often cause him to become the monster in a rage or panic. This severely limits where he can be, and what sort of situation he feels safe being in. It becomes most trying when teaching. Anxiety and troublesome students may leave him vulnerable, but teaching is what he loves.
In his monster form Jack cannot yet speak well and is usually restricted to a quadruped stance. He does have the capability to stand up fairly straight but is much more comfortable and more agile on all fours. He can manipulate things with his “hands” although the size of his fingers and claws keep him from performing detailed tasks. Jack is able to sustain significant injury, since he can heal quickly, but he is not invulnerable.
And booze…booze is his weakness too…
Relationships:
None yet in Bridgeport.
Personality:
Jack enjoys helping his students, and would like to meet more denizens of Bridgeport, but the fear of changing often holds him back. Therefore, he’s frequently in a depressing mood and quick to anger, which also causes him to drink too much. Pain in his once broken leg (as a result of the accident that made him a monster) serves as a constant reminder of his problems as well. He’ll usually end up at one of the local pubs, which can result in some trouble, and will eventually end up at Marlene’s for a safe place to change and a good talkin’ too (and often a few glasses of water and some ibuprofen). Despite his dreary moods he is a fiercely loyal friend to those who know him and takes great pleasure in teaching others about his favorite hobby and career: geology. If he can get his mind off all that ails him he can be a pretty happy chap!
In his monster form he reacts on instinct to fast moving objects and loud noises and will often awake from one of his “episodes” waist deep in some woodland or farm creature he has preyed upon.

Once totally human, Jack now has a rotten tendency of changing into a nearly seven foot tall (not counting tail) dragon-like monster. In this form he wings and an array of horns and scutes that protrude from a tough scaly hide (think crocodilian).
In better times Jack is roughly six feet tall with brown-dirty blonde hair and grey-blue eyes. Jack speaks with a thick New England accent since he was born in that region. He dresses fairly nice for his job, but tends to restrict his wardrobe to what he can find at thrift shops. As a result, he wears things that are slightly out of style and “well worn”. If he can modify his cloths to survive one of his changes easily, he will. As a result of his injury related to the incident which caused his affliction he occasionally will exhibit a slight limp.
History:
Jack here stumbled across some peculiar bones and eggshells in an isolated narrow canyon while looking for fossils as part of his PhD research project. He succeeded in finding an intact egg, only to have it break apart releasing a blast of powder into his lungs. Unfortunately Jack hadn’t checked the weather before entering the dangerous canyon and while he sat coughing up dust a sudden summer thunderstorm appeared.
The flash flood from the storm carried a wave of boulders across the site, destroying the discovery, burying Jack and breaking his leg. As he panicked and went into shock cells within the dust he inhaled, dormant since the egg was first buried, came to life to heal the host body. The leg healed, but the process continued further transforming him into something like the creatures whose bones he had found. Jack, now a creature that could only be described as a dragon, easily escaped the rubble and awoke two days later back at his campsite in tattered field cloths.
Jack tried to hide his condition when he returned home which was made more difficult as he initially had no control over when he would change. This forced him to constantly be aware of places he could hide, but eventually he learned stress, fear and anger most easily triggered the change and learned how to manipulate and hold off the transformation. After gaining consciousness in his changed form and realizing he had been in the middle of feeding off of a deer Jack decided it was time to get as far away from friends and family as possible.
Jack began looking for teaching jobs in other states and traveled to geology meetings and job fairs. It was during one such meeting held at the Bridgeport College campus that he stumbled across Marlene’s Halfway House. Depressed and upset after a long day of bad interviews and desperately looking for a strong drink Jack was beginning to transform when he stumbled to Marlene’s door (confused and thinking it might be a pub). After meeting some of the locally afflicted monster folk he felt Bridgeport was a place he might be safer in, and thought if he could get a job at the local college where he could be in a position to go back and find the bone site again to try to cure his “disease”. Jack managed to get a job as an assistant professor in the geology department at Bridgeport College where he finds some happiness between bouts of drinking and unscheduled trips into the surrounding forest.
