"Yeah, yeah; sssssssss." The mockery of Laurel's hiss was just a little too good for Monty's own good. The man sneered at her, his irritation back because of her incompetence. "I take it you're too off your rocker to formulate a more helpful response. If that's the case, just go." He waved one hand in a 'begone' motion, glancing around and wondering if perhaps she was cognitive enough to find her own way home. Or where ever she'd been headed.
In a moment of what seemed awfully close to regret, he'd realized that his demeanor was probably the catalyst for all of the nonsense. He'd made the poor girl turn into a dribbling, screeching hellbeast and now there was no telling what she could or couldn't do, or when she'd be fixed.
It was on that note that he'd decided he'd monitor her until she either turned back or went home. Not because he cared, of course, but because he was curious.

Laurel didn't notice the mocking and if she did, gave no response either way. Her eyes remained glued to the shimmering horns on his head, soon completely distracted by them. The first thing to cease was her anxious scratching at the ground beneath her. Her shoulders, though no less tense, dropped some and she straightened her back a little.
Her demeanor flipped as soon as his attention had eased on her, though and she opened her mouth to scream once more.
It came out as half a squeak, and half a choke as Laurel clapped a hand over her lips. She shook a bit, as if under some great tension. Her appearance, however, remained unchanged.

"Oh, no you don't!" Monty scowled, taking a step forward and waving a finger in her direction as he returned his attention more fully on keeping her trap shut. "Don't you do that ungodly affront to my ears thing to me. You may be able to get away with that with some other people, but not this monster, oh no." He frowned, looking displeased as she shuddered. He may not have liked her when he thought she was human, but he certainly preferred that to this version of the girl.
As he attempted to mentally push her into changing back - not quite sure if she even could - he voiced the inquiry aloud, more as a rhetorical question than anything. "Can you even go back to the not-as-taxing version? I'd appreciate your company more if you at least acted civil."

It probably wasn't hard to figure out that, without the use of her voice, she was practically helpless. He was met with almost no resistance from her as he advanced, but Laurel returned to cowering, keeping as close to the ground as possible. Her hand remained over her mouth.
...trying!
The first coherent thought. She gave a frustrated, worn sounding grunt in response to him.
And then it was like as soon as the switch had been brought on, it was gone. Laurel collapsed forward with an agonized groan of pain. Agonized, but human.
"G-God...ow..." She shut her eyes tightly and held pressed her temples in an attempt to relieve the sudden throbbing. She could hear herself talk, that meant she wasn't deaf? The colour was back in her skin, claws gone. For all intents and purposes, it was like nothing had happened.
She sat up, face reflecting the pain and stress all at once. "Where am..." She glanced around. Bridgeport. This looked like Bridgeport. Outside at night in Bridgeport?
"Not again..." Laurel glanced around quickly to scout for casualties, and let out a startled gasp when she saw Monty.

"It's about damn time," the man said tersely, a hand going to his hip in a scolding manner. "Do you have trigger for the screechy, gaunt version of you, or does that just kinda come on randomly?" His attitude was miffed, but he was relieved he didn't have to deal with said screechy version.
Monty gathered the long tendrils of hair scattered around his shoulders up, twisting the mass a few times before smashing the bun to his head and pulling out his hat. With a bit of difficulty and a few strands of hair being dislodged, the hat was put on and once more covered his nubby horns. Deep green eyes looked over her as he finished, and he gestured awkwardly, "You, uh, need help getting up?"

"No I don't know it just happen--wait, I attacked you?" She forgot about asking him why he looked the way he did. "I'm..sorry..." Laurel had a very limited idea of what happened. Walking home, he was..there?...
She looked up to his question.
"No, I'm...fine." Laurel got to her feet, trying to shake the pounding in her head and ears away. "You're okay?" Why didn't she ask that first? "No one's...ever okay...after...you're not going to tell anyone are you?" She tripped over her own feet approaching him - the grogginess hadn't worn off yet - but composed herself.
"You can't, okay? Please don't say anything. Not to anyone!" She grabbed his sleeve. "Please!"

He had a hard time responding to her jumbled sentencing and quick subject changes, but tried nonetheless. "Uh, yeah. No, don't worry about- Yes, I'm fine; I seriously doubt-"
Monty gaped, surprised as she scrambled and took a hold of his sleeve. He jerked away from her, looking offended by her touch. "Who would I tell? The humans?" He clucked his tongue, "I don't say more than I need to to them."
After assuring her, in a way, that her secret was safe with him, the man raised a brow in question, "That horrid mess you spew from your mouth kills people, I take it?"

Laurel raised both hands quickly in a gesture of goodwill as he tore away from her. She held them there, catching her breath and telling herself that this fit of hysterics wasn't going to be any help to her. She nodded as he, sort of, told her off. He wasn't saying anything, good...
"Kills?" Laurel looked around out of habit. "I don't know...not directly...well, maybe it might..." She trailed off as she remembered the heart attack she had caused. It hadn't been the direct cause of the man's death but the resulting complications afterward had.
She didn't want to think about it.
"...you said humans?" Laurel dropped her hands. "As in...you're...not?" Any memory of teeth or changing eyes was gone, though she did recall horns. Her jaw dropped slightly. Laurel's imagination assumed she was just some demon or freak. It had never gone quite so far as to think that others existed. In Laurel's world, there was her and the old thing that changed her.
"That makes sense, a bit..." More like if A exists, what's stopping B through Z?

"Hmm." Monty didn't look like he believed her on the subject of the fatality issue, but left it alone. It didn't matter, as it wouldn't affect him personally. He looked over her, confused momentarily before a smug look curled his lips.
"You didn't get a thing I said or did while you were changed, I take it." It wasn't a question, but he continued with an air that said he enjoyed explaining what he was. "Thankfully I am not human, nor do I ever hope to be," the fact that some of the individuals he'd encountered wanted to be mortal and without the gifts that fate had granted them was almost sickening. "I'm a serpent of legends past, an immortal son of Tau and Kerana."

Arrogant! She wasn't sure she cared for the attitude or if she wanted to stick around longer to listen to this. But she was curious, that much was obvious, and a small part of her hoped that maybe she had finally met someone who might know something.
"Serpent?" she repeated. "Of who?" While Laurel wasn't necessarily sheltered, she had never exactly been the type to go browsing through historical documents or religious texts. In fact, she really didn't know much about her own cultural mythos. She'd googled her own...issues, back in the day and banshee was the only thing that ever really came up. She had been hesitant to accept it.
Laurel shivered and remembered suddenly where they were. "Maybe we should...go somewhere warmer?" She didn't want to interrupt him but there had to be something at least a little suspicious about two townspeople being out here at this hour.

Monty frowned when his explanation wasn't met with Oo's and Ah's and awestruck adoration. Okay, perhaps he hadn't expected it, but a little recognition would have been nice.
"Yeah, serpent. Snake. Big scaley reptile of myth and legend. And-" He stopped, acknowledging as she brought it up that it was quite cold, and he suddenly was not fond of that fact. "Good idea. Where to?" He asked almost cheerfully, eager to be rid of the climate. "Can we make a pit stop along the way?" Now that he'd come back to realizing the other elements of the evening, he recalled that he was severely lacking in the sugary delights department, and if he was to continue with his pleasant mood he needed supplies.

Big scaly reptile of myth and legend? He didn't look like a big scaly reptile of myth and legend. Maybe there was a trick to that, like how she didn't look like she was dangerous.
"Er...I don't know, there's not many places on this side of town that are open...my apartment is close?" She shrugged as he mentioned a stop. "No, I don't mind." She adjusted her bag on her shoulder and stuck her gloved hands into her pockets.
"Whereabouts are we going?" She considered this was the official affirmation that her secret was safe and he wasn't dangerous. Laurel relaxed her posture, feeling a little better about this. Enough, at least, that the headache didn't seem as bad as usual.

"Good, I'm starving and I was on my way to get a midnight snack when you bumped into me, so.." He turned on heel quite suddenly, striding away with boots clicking as he continued along his original route towards one of the few convenience stores still open at this hour.
"So what are you, exactly? If you don't mind me saying," he added to prevent some offense as he glanced back at her. "It's always a pleasure to meet a creepy crawly creature of the night, and I enjoying hearing about exploits and such."

Laurel struggled to keep up with his pace and the conversation, practically speed jogging to keep up with his strides. Food sounded like a fabulous idea. The cafe had been busy, so her meals that day consisted of granola bars and lattes...
"A snack sounds great," she mumbled in response, burying her nose in the collar of her coat.
She frowned a little when he asked her what she was. "I uh, I'm not not human, I don't think...I don't know. Banshee is the closest thing I came up with. Wasn't always like this." She wanted the previous life back. Culinary school, her boyfriend, his health, her peace of mind...
"Exploits!" Her frown deepened, and her blue eyes darkened at his terminology. "I don't choose to go out of my way to harm others..." But was she really that creepy? She'd never spoken to someone who'd seen what she could become and she'd only glanced at her reflection once. At that time, her focus was too distorted and hazy to really recall much, though as sure as she had been to tell herself that creature was not her, it was a familiar reflection.

"Oh, still plagued with the whole 'human' disposition, are we?" He glanced at her with a sympathetic look. "My apologies." Monty always felt sympathy for those few monsters who still had to deal with the mortal sensibilities and demeanor, he couldn't imagine living with such an attitude himself. The idea was dreary as is.
At her haughty response to his mention of exploits he turned a confused lavender gaze her way once more. "Really? Why not," he mused, not really asking so much as wondering why someone wouldn't embrace his or her gift. As he came back from his thoughts the man nudged her with one elbow. "You should try it sometime, it really loosens you up. Like... Yoga. Only with more stress relief in a quicker time frame."
