Name/Nickname:
Annabel Fitzgerald. Likes to be called Anna, hates to be called Annie. Pleased and embarrassed to be called Bella or Belle.
Age:
23
Gender:
Female (toys with her gender expression)
Height:
165 cm (25 cm)
Weight:
60 kg (4 kg)
Alignment:
Chaotic Neutral (although with strong tendencies towards Neutral Good when given encouragement)
Affliction:
Carelessness and poor decision making. Anna tried to cast a spell without a proper understanding of the lunar calendar and suffered the consequences. She is now stuck in the form of a calico cat. She still answers to ‘Anna’.
She once managed to partly break out of the transformation but the result was painful and unsightly and she quickly reverted. In spite of this, given the right opportunity she would not hesitate to try it again.
Nationality:
Australian
Occupation:
Student, English tutor, book retailer, blogger, bludger.
Skills and Abilities:
Proficient with Microsoft word, knowledgeable in occult and feminist theory, a solid, if wordy, writer. Good with people as both a person and a cat.
Weaknesses:
Champagne (gives her terrible hangovers), cat nip (makes her silly). She’s swayed by compliments and likes to hear them.
Relationships:
Mum (Grace)- Has a positive relationship with her mother, tempered by her bouts of thoughtlessness. She isn’t the most doting daughter but is fairly aware of her stuff ups after the fact and usually tries to make up for them. Her mother respects her independence but doesn’t hold out much hope that Anna will one day be a responsible adult. They used to have irregular mother-daughter days when Anna lived in Sydney, once she left for the USA she started to call more.
Dad (George)- Anna was very close to her father as a child but her adolescence did a number on their bond. Anna quickly went from being Daddy’s little girl to resenting what she perceived as interference into her life. They still love each other but they don’t have the same relationship that they used to. Anna doesn’t realise that he misses her and George is confused by his daughter’s choices in life (“You know what B.A. stands for, Grace? It stands for Bugger All. Bugger All specialising in History!”).
Older Brother (Peter)- Peter is the sensible one in the family, the straight man to her comic and the law-abider to her anarchist. Peter is vocal in his opinion that Anna is irresponsible and wasting her education. She is equally vocal that he is too responsible, boring and a stick in the mud. Peter worries that she will die penniless and homeless. Anna worries that Peter will have a heart attack at forty without any friends to visit him in hospital. Their criticisms and fears are not unfounded and despite the adversary nature of the siblinghood, they want the other to succeed. Anna checks in with her brother more regularly than her parents and he is the first that noticed when she stopped.
Personality:
Likes: Personal freedom, reading about occult practices, writing, rainbows, being right.
Dislikes: Rigid authority, budgeting, mainstream pop music, eating rodents, being proved wrong in public (surprisingly amenable to it in private).
Acts: Anna used to think she was a super-special snowflake, despite being middle class, Caucasian and just generally average. As a result she has always had an air of entitlement and confidence that other people found attractive, unless they saw through it. Turning herself into a domestic short-hair has put a dampener on this. When/if she makes her makes back to the world of the bipedals she will have a little more humility in her daily interactions. She is much more appreciative than she was before, though she still resents being out of control of her choices.
Appearance:
Human: Brown-haired, brown-eyed, heart-shaped face, straight nose, slight cheekbones, average height, weight and build. She keeps her hair long and habitually straightens it. Anna smiles a lot and is generally considered to be pretty. Her style of dress can vary considerably and she runs through many phases.
Cat: Calico, green-eyed, robust-bodied, pointy-eared, fluffy-tailed. Her fur was in fairly poor condition until she became comfortable with grooming it. Anna purrs a lot as she finds it soothing.
Intermediate: Difficult to describe. The shift from cat to almost-human is like watching a cicada break out of its shell but much faster and more unpleasant to watch. The last time she achieved it, she managed to increase her size considerably and convert her left eye back to its human state. Her chin remained non-existent and much furrier on the right side. Her tail became smaller and rigid, which in turn made sitting impossible. Her feet began to shift from digitigrade to plantigrade before the pain made her lose concentration and control of the process.
History:
Anna was born and raised in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. Her life was easy, though not opulent. She was educated privately and completed her schooling without too many incidents. Her early attempts at asserting her individuality included smoking because it made her feel like Lauren Bacall and cutting school to attend protest marches because she wanted to change the world. Anna became a much more effective activist when she entered into university, which provided her with more rewarding opportunities to volunteer in the community and cut class, with few repercussions due to the advent of e-lectures. Anna enjoyed the fact that she could structure her own day however she wanted to and study whatever courses she liked. Her life was rich in friendships and romantic relationships, though she was never especially close to anyone.
Anna was planning to write a thesis on feminist perspectives of the occult but decided to take a gap year first. Anna was going to spend it travelling the USA, Europe and Singapore while researching and blogging about whatever occult practices she could find and try while on the move. She only made it to the US, though she had worked her way from New York through to the West Coast over the two months she was there. Anna did get research done, most of it through hanging out around other occultists, professional (fake) psychics and witches.
She was not critical enough of her work.
Her fortieth attempted spell actually had some method in it and might have worked properly had she cast it on the night of the full moon (as the writings she found dictated) and not the evening before. Instead of summoning a creature from another plane that likely would have eaten her, she turned herself into a housecat. The next night marked the only time she was able to partly break free of the spell.
She has been stuck as a cat for three weeks. Her brother is worried and her parents are beginning to grow fearful as well. Her visa runs out in three months. Anna’s screwed.
Anything Else:
Anna’s bag is still in the woods, where she left it. She carried a number of potentially useful materials with her including clay, herbs, cloths, various tree roots and a few talismans. Most of it isn’t worth a damn but if she had some guidance, her untested theoretical knowledge could be worth something. Her only goal at the moment is to stop being a cat but the longer she remains as one, the harder it is to imagine turning back.
What makes matters worse is the fact that she’s been in Bridgeport for three weeks and hasn’t yet realised that help is right in front of her if she tried to communicate with the right people.
